She was awarded an Academy Award nod for the part she played in Dances with Wolves, as Stands With A Fist. In addition to this role McDonnell is known for her portrayal of Laura Roslin (President of Battlestar Galactica), the president's spouse in Independence Day as well as her leading role in the role of Donnie Darko's mother.
